I am Lisa, married to Gary.  We’re from South Africa originally, now living in Bradley Stoke

I home educate 3 children aged 10, 8 and 4 – one of whom has dyslexia.

I home educate because I found that the education system was not benefitting my children.  In fact they were worse off in the system and it was having a bad effect on them.

The best thing about home education is being with my children and learning alongside them.

My biggest challenge is that I never find time for myself.

My home education style is an unschooling approach.  We use a curriculum for maths and English but everything else is child led.  My son is interested in history so we use a lot of books to follow that interest.  My daughter is very creative so we’re planning to start a patchwork quilt soon.  My youngest loves to play – and we all like to play with him!

My family are sceptical.  They want to know how it’s all going to work out and they don’t understand why the children aren’t in school like everyone else.

My friends with children in school don’t know how I do it.  However, more and more of my friends are also home educators where there is a great camaraderie.

I am prepared to home educate as far as I can go – we’re taking it a year at a time.

My advice to a new home educator is not to panic and to enjoy each day as it comes.
